What will I be studying?

Physical Education in Key Stage 4 will provide students with the opportunity to take some of the activities covered in Key Stage 3 further. Physical Education is a statutory subject for all students up to, and including, Year 11. As well as contributing to the development of healthy lifestyle choices, it provides students with opportunities to develop skills that are not so easily developed in a classroom setting.

We adhere to the guidance set out in the National Curriculum to provide a broad and balanced learning experience for students of all abilities and ages. As well as delivering invasion games activities, such as Basketball, Rugby, Gaelic Football, Handball and Dodgeball, students have the opportunity to participate in Outdoor Adventurous Activities, Health-Related Fitness and Gymnastics. 

There are also opportunities to participate in school teams across a range of different sports.

Year 7
– Build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2
– Identify a range of tactics and strategies used to outwit opponents in team games
– Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team
– Analyse their own performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement
– Identify the long-term health benefits of physical activity and be able to track and monitor Heart Rate during aerobic exercise
– Take an active role in the extra-curricular sports programme

Year 8
– Build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Year 7 and become more competent and confident in their techniques
– Understand and use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition
– Analyse their peers performance and understand what makes a performance effective
– Provide opportunities for students to develop their teamwork and problem solving skills in a range of outdoor and adventurous activities
– Understand and apply the long-term benefits of physical activity through active involvement in competitive sports and activities in and outside of school

Year 9
– Build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Year 7 & 8
– Develop their expertise of team games by building on prior knowledge in a double option block
– Develop a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in both team and individual sports
– Understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others work
– Explore the effects of exercise on the body and develop understanding of different methods of training
– Provide opportunities for students to develop their teamwork and problem solving skills in a range of outdoor and adventurous activities
– Participate in a range of sports clubs and activities in and outside of school

Year 10
– Practise, revisit and refine skills learned in Key Stage 3
– Increase leadership opportunities through the use of peer coaching
– Evaluate their own performances including the use of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents, suggest ways to improve and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities
– Utilising a range of different environments, participate in further outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and which encourage pupils to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
– Develop personal fitness and apply the principles of training to personalised fitness programmes
– Promote health active lifestyles through involvement in competitive sports and activities in the community

Year 11
– Develop competency and depth of knowledge in a range of sporting activities
– Provide students with the opportunity to adopt the role of a leader, coach and official, thus developing their leadership skills
– Aim to develop resilience, teamwork and other transferable skills through sport and competition
– Encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity by exposing students to a wider variety of activities
